Mother Tongue

Mother tongue
I have many parallel lives
I carry them around with me
Like a bunch of twigs
They stretch in all directions
As I try to contain them in my arms
I have the memories of foreign lands
Many languages sketched all over my body
Sometimes one language makes its way
From my mind and escapes through my mouth
As I am trying to speak another
I have a glitch somewhere in my soul
Always a little piece slightly out of sink
My foster mother tongue is so precise
It almost replaces my mother tongue
As it leaps forward effortlessly
I have become at once a world citizen
And a citizen of nowhere
I speak with an accent in other languages
While sounding odd in my own
I close my mouth and wait for what is yet to come

Étranger a moi même
03:46
|
|||
Étranger à moi-même
Caminho pelas ruas
Dessa cidade
Nesse final de tarde
Vazia
Sem assombro nem alegria
Portas abertas
Cheiro de ventania
Estrangeiros somos todos
Como disse Júlia Kristeva
O meu eu calado
Observa o meu outro eu
Passos largos de volta à casa
Étranger à moi-même

Gema

Gema
This poem is about my appreciation of the differnt cultures that have become part of my core.
Sou paulistana da gema,
Gema preciosa
Essência multicor
Por onde flutuam
Pensamentos, palavras e sentimentos
Em línguas várias
Sou brasileira tupiniquim
Latina viviendo sin fronteras
Auslander
Cidadã do mundo que gosta de ouvir
MPB, funk e jazz
Swissgrove Radio pela internete
De dançar ao som de bangra, raï,
Eletrônica and drum’n’bass
Ojos de Brujo, Femi Kuti
Amina, Cheb Mami
Home is where the heart is
So they say
Mas meu coração errante
Il est par tout
São Paulo, Curitiba,
New York, Berkeley,
Salvador, Paris,
Berlim, Amsterdam
Quem sabe um dia
Dakar e Dehli.
Chico, Gil, Milton, Lo Borges, Lenine
E de tantos mais.
Minha boca se enche d’água
Quando sinto o cheiro de samosas,
Nan e mango lassi,
Tandoori chicken, Sushi,
Comida tailandesa, chiles rellenos,
Hummus, baba genush,
Pita bread, pão de queijo
Moqueca de peixe, farofa,
Tutu de feijão, virado de couve,
Mandioca, escarola, agrião,
Doce de leite, beijinho,
Suco de maracujá, jabuticaba,
É fruta que não se acaba.
Minha certidão de nascimento diz
Que a minha cor é branca
Eu sempre achei isso muito mal contado
O lado português,
Tão vangloriado pelo meu pai,
Nunca enganou a minha avó:
Cara de índio, nariz chato,
Pele morena, cabelo assanhado.
Aqui renasço enquanto
“person of color.”
Já limpei casa com piscina
Cuidei de filho alheio,
Fiz coisas que
Faculdade nenhuma ensina
Camaleoa que sou
Vou me adaptando pela vida afora
Dependendo de onde estou.
Com filhos que são americanos ,
Mas também são brasileiros e alemães
Marido afro-deustch
Alemão com cara de brasileiro
Whatever that means
Filhos com sotaque de gringo
Para quem Saci, Maus,
Caipora e Nikolaus
Habitam o mesmo universo de
Dr. Seus, Tin Tin e Asterix
Minha vida é marcada
Por uma sucessão de adeuses:
Aeroportos e passaportes,
Abraços ao vento.
Mas também de boas-vindas:
Janelas abertas,
Portas por abrir,
Good wishes.
Saudade que nunca se finda.
Ainda assim
É em sendo estrangeira
Que adoto uma pátria
Onde cabe a humanidade inteira.
Uma pátria sem fronteiras
Onde cada um festeja
As cores de suas bandeiras
O resto são fragmentos da memória
Cheiros, sons, paisagens
Mais lã no novelo da minha história.
E a minha boca se enche d’água
Vatapá, caju,
Suco de manga
Bijou
Pesto,
Foccacia, sundried tomato
Bolo de fubá
Fogão de lenha
Guaraná
Heisse Maronen von der Strasse
Leb Kuchen
Schocolade
Blueberries
Rasperries
Stroopwafels with tea
Baklavah, vanilla,
Apple pie and Hagelslag

Wandering Heart
03:11
|

Wandering heart
I was born with a wondering heart
Thousands of miles away
In a city that never sleeps
Where you cannot see the horizon
But you can buy flowers at three in the morning
Millions of people coming and going
I can easily remember names of airports
Even though they always feel the same
I like watching the long list of destinations go by
Home is just a state of being
I belong to many places
My roots spreading all over
I strive for a world borderless
I have learned to mistrust flags
While stretching my heart

Be

|
|||
Be
Sometimes I feel like an empty vessel
Winds howling through my body
I am an invisible ghost walking through the streets
Watching everything go by
My life, a distant post
Sometimes I feel like I am a bridge
Words running through my mouth
Translating experiences
Connecting people
Even when I am not fully there
I love big cities
Where I can just be
February 2006
Sou barco solitário navegando
O lado silencioso das águas
As luzes do teu porto
Tornam-se a cada hora
Mais e mais distantes
Alguma coisa aconteceu:
Uma pedra,
Um tropeço,
Uma palavra não dita,
Um suspiro,
Uma rosa morta no chão.
Alguma coisa se perdeu
Entre os azuis
E a fonte de sombras.
Longo aceno,
Cheiro de gardênias.
Cais.

Abertura

|

Abertura
É o que a vida me ensina
Em ângulos delicados
É o meu olhar que determina
O vazio do copo
Mas eu o prefiro cheio
Em cada desafio
Vejo uma oportunidade
Onde há escassez
Vejo fartura
Onde há obstáculo
Abertura

O Amor
03:04
|
|||
O amor
Meu amor
Desconhece
Espaço e tempo
Rasga horizontes
E inventa
Novos caminhos
Meu amor
Brilha único
Dentro de mim
Ninguém pode vê-lo
Nem decifrá-lo
Em seu silêncio
É minha jóia,
Meu segredo:
Amar o amor
Que sinto
Até mais que ao ser amado
O amor é sábio
Solta o mapa segue a lua
A minha língua se traduz
Ao encontro da língua tua
O amor é valente
Ignora o medo
Não teme a distância
(Re)Inventa segredo
Abrindo portas rancorosas
Que me aprisionam a alma
Eu te perdoo
Porque a mágoa é uma mortalha
Que já não me serve
Eu te perdoo
Porque o passado me escorre pelas escadas
Feito água abaixo
Eu te perdoo
Porque é te perdoando
Que eu me refaço inteira

Avore da Vida

Árvore da vida
Árvore da vida
Carregada de cachos de leite
Sempre morno, sempre doce
Bico ereto, suplicante
Atrevido, insinuante
Saciando outras bocas famintas
Fonte de desejos
Que vem do corpo e da alma
Eles aquietam
Colo sereno
Eles inquietam
Lábios entreabertos
Obra de arte que desabrocha
Em total abandono
É nossa essa herança das deusas

That Girl
04:39
|
|||
Girl from Ipanema
Tall and tan
Cheia de graça
Swaying hips that will leave you dreaming
Sabor de cravo e canela
Brown sugar and spice
Morena, gostosa
I am a girl from the south
South of the equator
You may think I am hot
But Girl from Ipanema
I am not
I don’t mind Carmen Miranda
Yes, we’ve got bananas
But please spare me from your samba
I think Gisele Bundchen is too skinny
Never mind the size of my biquini
I don’t care about soccer, feijoada
Cachaça or carnival
Yeah, Rio is beautiful
Mas o Brasil é mais legal
My jungle is made out of concrete
My food is Japanese, Italian
And Lebanese
Even though I may love Spanish
I speak Portuguese
Mulher brasileira
Salve, salve
Stand tall and show what you’ve got
Estudante, professora
Empregada, secretária,
Boia fria, operária,
Empresária,
Artista
Guerreira
Bonita
Daughter, sister
Mother, lover
Parceira
Carinhosa
Companheira

Via Crucis

Via Crucis
Hoje é sexta-feira
Sexta-feira da paixão
Via Crucis
Dia de procissão
Entro na igreja aberta
Não tem missa nem vela
Numa manhã cinzenta
Duas mulheres trabalham
Um menino ensaia a leitura
Espio pela fresta
Memória vaga
Desbotada
No banco, sentadinha
A menina
Rodeada de mulheres
Terços entre os dedos
Véu de renda preto
Cristo ensanguentado
Velório virtual
Sem saber porquê
Mesmo aos cinco anos
Aceito a mea culpa
Sempre o mesmo ritual
Todo ano o filme se repete
Pôncio Pilatos lavando as mãos
Como os políticos ainda o fazem
Como nós o fazemos ao ignorarmos
O sofrimento alheio

And smell the ripe fruit from a branch
Impossible to reach
I stand at the edge of reason
Unsure of my thoughts
Slowly forgetting

Cognitive Dissonance
03:44
|
|||
Cognitive dissonance
The world is going to hell in a basket.
“Aber alles in Ordnung hier,”
Says my German friend
But here everything is ok
He says in appreciation of our quiet neighborhood
The woman living next door to me
Tells me about the “cognitive dissonance” she experiences
Driving through these beautiful streets
While listening to the war reports on the radio
I too feel the same dissonance
Life is filled with parallel realities
Separated by no more than a thin membrane
Horror is the other face of beauty
If we stay still and look inside
We will see beyond six degrees
The chain is nothing but a thread
What makes me human is the
Humanity I see reflected in you

Keine Angst

|

Keine Angst
Ich habe keine Angst,
Fear I have not.
As I age I become raw.
What people think is of no concern to me.
When I was younger
My heart was just an open window
Now it is a door wide open
I notice everything around
Every nuance, every leaf
Beauty is magnified
I take great pleasure in my children’s laughter
And find the landscape around me intoxicating
But not only beautiful things visit an open heart
Haunting images of death and sorrow
Also claim their space
And once the heart is open
There is no key that will make it shut

My Eyes are Tired
03:00
|
|||
My eyes are tired
My heart is filled with sorrow
As I walk through my beautiful neighborhood
I think of people dying by the hundreds in Lebanon
Many of them children like mine
I think of people trapped in their villages
The whole world watching
I think also about the people of Haifa
Terrified in their shelters
The insanity engulfing them all
Muslim, Christian and Jew
Holly land transformed in perpetual hell
As I walk through my peaceful neighborhood
Filled with the smells of coffee and nice restaurants
I think of the hundreds dead in Indonesia
Mother earth unleashing her wrath in unexpected bursts
Geological plates shifting bellow us in mysterious ways
The stench of rotting flesh
The resilience of the human spirit
The fragility of us all
I think of my beloved Bay Area
This tragic fate, may we be spared
As I walk through my innocent neighborhood
People smile at me while walking their dogs
I think of the explosion in India
Tired people just trying to get home
Frantic relatives searching for them
Faith can make you blind
Have mercy on us all
I take solace in the hazy view of the Pacific, the Golden Gate,
The gentle green and the flowers around me
This golden light let it shine
July 22
This poem is dedicated to the dead in Lebanon, Gaza, Israel, Indonesia and India.
