lyrics

Mother tongue

I have many parallel lives
I carry them around with me
Like a bunch of twigs
They stretch in all directions
As I try to contain them in my arms

I have the memories of foreign lands
Many languages sketched all over my body
Sometimes one language makes its way
From my mind and escapes through my mouth
As I am trying to speak another

I have a glitch somewhere in my soul
Always a little piece slightly out of sink
My foster mother tongue is so precise
It almost replaces my mother tongue
As it leaps forward effortlessly

I have become at once a world citizen
And a citizen of nowhere
I speak with an accent in other languages
While sounding odd in my own
I close my mouth and wait for what is yet to come
